Cost of Politics in NYC
Cost of Politics in NYC - New York is in the most expensive media market in the U.S.  Elections for citywide races are usually a high dollar affair. This year broke the record.  Joe Mercurio, in his December 6th  newsletter, comments on the election and itemizes how Mike Bloomberg spent $70 million to win his mayoral seat.
Shame.Org
Shame.org  - A site devoted to exposing discrimination. It lists and describes people, places, companies, organizations and the media who have discriminated. It also gives you an opportunity to vote your agreement with their choices and to nominate others for their Hall of Shame.
POST 9/11/ 01 WEB SITES
Continuing our search for meaningful web sites, check out the following:

The Office of Homeland Security Home Security Action. The Site coordinates national strategy against terrorist attacks in the United States.   The President’s list of the “Most Wanted Terrorists” is posted on the home page.  There are also opportunities for Americans to get involved.

AFGHA Describing themselves as a press agency, this Afghanistan news site collects information from many sources. A Belgo-French student created the Site and most of the producers are students.   Exclusive and original material, an excellent archive, make this Site worth visiting. There is a French and German version.

Participate America Urging Americans to honor our democracy and the American people by continuing to volunteer, contribute and reach out to our neighbors.  The Site is organizing a grassroots effort to support the Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) Resolution 140 establishing National Civic Participation Week.

The Biological Terrorism Response Manual Bioterrorism and biowarfare have been used throughout history.  The Site charts the dates, events and form of terrorism used. However, the Site was developed to act as an online worldwide community resource for identification and treatment in response to biological terrorism.  In addition to educational tools and products, the Site includes a resource section.

Scholarship Five $1000 scholarships to Junior and Senior High School students will be awarded September 11, 2002 by Patriot Signage.  Entrants must submit an original essay of 350 words or less on what “Freedom in America” means to you.

PRACTICAL & INTERESTING POLITICAL WEB SITES

Strategies for Winning Campaigns and Elections  A resource with “how to” articles, written by Steve Grubbs, a former Republican Legislator from Iowa, using his campaign as a model for running for office at the local level.

Democratic Talk Radio Started by two Al Gore activists, Stephen Crockett and Al Lawrence, their radio show is about politics from a Democratic grassroots perspective.  You can download their previous programs and interviews.   The Site allows you to post comments and link to democratic sites.

Wood for Governor Corinne Wood for Governor Campaign.  A feisty Republican candidate in a Gubernatorial primary.  The site is well constructed but what is unusual is that all of her political ads are on-line.

Flake for Congress Chester Flake for Congress Campaign.  His campaign is of interest because he is in a Republican Florida primary contest against Secretary of State Katherine Harris.

Why the $5 Governor? Mark Osterloh, the Five $ Governor.  Democratic Gubernatorial candidate in Arizona, urging $5 contributions to his campaign.

POLITICAL HUMOR, INFO AND GOSSIP WEB SITES
Time for the lighter side

Chorlter.com describes itself as a satirical online newspaper.  Check out “Parlez-vous Greenspeak”, a humorous translation of the words of Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan.  Other items include the “Ode to Chad”, learning the “Condit-ional Tense”, and other features.

The Drudge Retort The Drudge Retort, is a liberal response to Matt Drudge’s Drudge Report, featured here several years ago.   They describe themselves as “putting the Yellow back in Journalism.”  The format is the same as the Drudge Report, there is some overlap in the political commentators included but the content is slanted different.

Lucianne.com Lucianne Goldberg’s “no holds barred” look at the world.  Her “suck up(s) of the week” are biting and are worth a smile and a nod of the head.

The Political Cliche Site The site describes itself as an arsenal of clichés for the successful American Politician.  There is a wealth of chuckles in the clichés about candidates, how to run a campaign, how to give a speech, scandals, etc.

White House Plumbing Bathroom history at the White House.  Among the least of President Bush’s problems is whether the plumbing works.  This has not always been the case.  The Site chronicles the uneven and often primitive conditions of life in the White House.
